Overview
Handling units are a packaging management feature that enable users to work with the same product in different package quantities.
System automatically recalculate the quantity between different handling units using the system unit and ratio of each handling unit.
At the same time, this functionality allows to speed up such processes as cycle counts, good acceptance and order picking by scanning a handling unit barcode and get the proper number of units in the system.
How It Works
Define the system unit β Establish your base unit of measurement (usually 1 piece). System unit is defined in the reference data as below:
Create handling units β Set up additional package types with their conversion ratios to the system unit.
See article : Setting up Handling Units
Use throughout operations β Select the appropriate handling unit when creating orders, receipts, or transfers. If each handling unit has itβs own barcode, system will detect it by scanning and automatically convert the quantity into stock keeping units.
When Do You Need Handling Units?
Handling units are essential when your business operations involve:
Different packaging levels in the supply chain
Purchasing items in bulk quantities (pallets, cases)
Selling in retail quantities (individual units, small packs)
Receiving goods in one format and shipping in another
Multiple units of measure
Working with the same product measured in different ways
Converting between purchase, storage, and sales units automatically
Barcode scanning operations
When each handling unit has its own unique barcode, we specifically recommend setting up handling units in the system
This significantly increases operational efficiency by enabling direct scanning at the package level
Warehouse staff can scan cases, pallets, or individual items without manual quantity conversion
Reduces picking errors and speeds up receiving, shipping, and inventory counting processes
